![]() I wish therefore to briefly trace the development of archae-ology in Burma, summarize its findings, and place it in a larger Southeast Asian context. My specialty involves epigraphy (one of the more productive branches of the Archaeological Survey), while my interest in the origins of the state in Burma has invariably drawn me closer to prehistory and particularly early Southeast Asian history (preclassical/urbanized Southeast Asia) in general. Not an archaeologist, I am wary of dilettantism. While a summary of the past 20 years of archaeological work in Burma would be a contribution, its relationship to the context of a larger Southeast Asian picture might prove to be even more significant. Of these, fewer still address the larger issues and problems in Southeast Asian archaeology.
